Resumo: This work discusses the relationship between orality and writing in a proposal for the teaching of the interview genre and demonstrates how this study can contribute for students to master the notions, techniques, and instruments needed for the development of their oral and written expressions. Our objective is to defend the point that we should not treat the relationships between speech and writing as rigid, dichotomous ones. Instead, we propose to look at these relationships within a broader realm, that of communication practices and discourse genres. In order to do so, we found this research in Bakhtin s concepts of interaction, genre, utterance, and sphere. To constitute the corpus for this research, a didactic activity was applied to students of the second grade of middle school (ensino médio) at Escola Nossa Senhora das Graças, a private school in São Paulo. Such activity is a part of a pedagogical project called Metropolis and Citizenship (Metrópoles e Cidadania) fostered by the school with the objective of promoting students reflection about the city of São Paulo by studying its main problems, its contradictions, its inequalities, and the ways to tackle these challenges. Aiming at creating an urban and motivational counterpoint to think the metropolis of São Paulo and, in doing so, contribute to the discussion and reflection, during the development of the Project, students travel to Brasilia, our nation s capital. Having these considerations as a starting point, a didactic activity was proposed in which the study of interviews is the means to offer students communicative practices that involve linguistic actions based on the idea that the use of language takes place in a continuum of relationships between the oral and written modalities. To achieve this goal, the activity was dived into three phases. In the first one, students interviewed, in the school premises, the production director of the Folha de S. Paulo newspaper, Luis Antônio de Oliveira. In the second phase, at the National Congress, the same students interviewed some national political representatives. Finally, with the closing of the project, the interviews were published in newspapers produced by the students. The proposal enabled the transposition from oral to written modalities and confirmed that this study may contribute to helping students perceive how communication is structured, developing linguistic competency in situations of public use of language. Furthermore, this study shows that it is possible to insert social practices of reading and writing in the Portuguese Language classroom in which the reception, production and circulation of text are focused on the creation of meaning, going beyond the school walls
