INTRODUCTION: Scientific research has been proving the benefits of the humananimal relationship, which might have an impact on the child development. This study proposes to investigate the possible effects of this relationship in the oral language acquisition process. PURPOSE: To investigate the characteristics of the oral language acquisition process in children belonging to multispecies families, in which the dog is the pet. METHOD: this is an exploratory, descriptive, qualitative, cross-sectional study. Sample: 54 children of both genders, on the age range from 3 months to 4 years and 6 months: 34 subjects belonging to multispecies families (Research Group – RG); and, 20 subjects that have never belonged to multispecies families (Control Group – CG). The research was conducted in the subjects’ own residences, who lived in the cities of Curitiba and São Paulo. Procedure: The data were collected through the observation and filming of a 30-minute interactional situation, in the family routine, involving the dog’s presence, on the RG, and without any pet, on the CG. Analysis of the results: The data were analyzed based on the Behavioral Observation Protocol (PROC), particularly regarding the items related to the subjects’ communicative skills and verbal comprehension. After that, the same procedure was performed by a speech-languagehearing judge with expertise on oral language acquisition, with the purpose of external validation of the data. Specifically on the RG, the videos were also analyzed, and a posteriori content analysis categories were established. RESULTS: In the studied population, no statistically significant differences were noted on the scores, namely: expressive and communicative skills (p=0.713); oral speech comprehension (p=0.597); and, total PROC (p=0.693). Through the content analysis, it is made evident that the dog performed the interlocutor role during the interaction scenes, being it possible to observe communicative functions in the child. CONCLUSION: The results of this research indicate that there were no statistically significant differences on the Behavioral Evaluation Protocol scores between the research and control groups. Nonetheless, though the statistical results have not evidenced difference between the groups, positive aspects concerning language acquisition were observed on the multispecies interactions. It was noted that the dog’s presence has not only favored the family interaction, but has also performed the interlocutor role in many of the scenes in which the communication happened |
