Resumo: The purpose of this work was to redeem the masterpieces of Afonso Henriques de Lima Barreto, writer of inestimable value, brazilian modernity s pioneer, but who, in spite of all these qualities, was rejected by his contemporary critics. To reach that goal we reconstituted his trajectory and historical context to be able to analyze certain myths that stigmatized him and his works in negative way. The writer was accused of being a negligent, revengeful, incompetent person and alcoholic as well, in a time where a literary work was evaluated through a biographical prism and considered the writer s life reflex. Then we tried to emphasize the importance of Lima Barreto s work in the national identity construction. We showed that since the very beginning of national literature, writers had assumed the task of developing it. This formulation, however, was market by the colonialism ideology, characterized by the ethnical and social exclusion of the negro, the indian, the mestizo, and the white pauper. Lima Barreto s militant literatures helps to reveal this ideology, based on idealized national identity and in a contradictory way, creates precedents for it to be recreated in modern times. To help understand the rupture operated by Lima Barreto, we built a synopsis of writers, critics and intellectuals that dealt with this issue. Following that perspective, we analyzed two Lima Barreto s capital masterpieces Policarpo Quaresma s Sad Ending and Clerk Isaías Caminha s Remembrances, whose protagonists reveal, through a confrontation between a formal and a real Brazil, in an ironical and sarcastic way, the country s flaws, governed by elites that conceal them through the official discourse so that they can satisfy their own hidden interests. Lima Barreto s work sarcastic accent doesn t make it superficial, as criticized by his pairs, but on contrary helps to reveal the essence of the national character
