Resumo: |
The aim of this master\'s dissertation was to investigate how psychologists have worked with questions of Cultural Diversity in their clinical practice, if this diversity is considered during psychological consultation, to what extent the Theoretical Approach influences psychologists work with Cultural Diversity, and what were the difficulties and/or impacts felt by professionals. Utilizing qualitative research with the theoretical foundation on the vision new paradigmatic of complexity, inter-subjectivity and unpredictability six psychologists were interviewed using semi-structured interviews: two psychologists work in private practice, three work for public institutions, and one works for a private institution. All of them work for different institutions and have various theoretical approaches. The qualitative data analysis was based on numerous recurrent readings in which regularities and differences stood out and converged into meaningful categories. The outcomes concentrated mainly on aspects related to the theoretical approach used by the psychologist, the types of clients with whom he/she worked, and the context in which he/she worked, considering the relationship among those aspects. A dynamic and relational perspective with respect to cultural definition was used analyzing various selected categories: race, ethnics, gender, educational socioeconomic class, and sexual orientation. I also propose reflections on the current role and profile of the clinical psychologist and his/her effectiveness given the many existing divergent cultures in Brazil; on the importance of considering Cultural Diversity; on the difficulties of understanding how psychologists work with their clients; on some therapy models that include cultural competence ; and on the changes necessary to make the psychologist\'s work more consonant with social action and justice. |
