Resumo: |
Health is the first and most important form of wealth and is a key natural resource of a nation. Health prevention saves individuals and their families pain, suffering, longterm disability or premature death. 1 Smoking is considered by the World Health Organization (WHO), the leading cause of preventable death worldwide. The WHO estimates that one-third of the adult population, 1.2 billion people, are smokers.2 The introduction into school life, habits compatible with a healthy lifestyle will prevent much of the current rates of morbidity and mortality due to diseases tobacco related . Within this context, this study aimed to evaluate an intervention in education on smoking and its consequences, guide and evaluate the students' understanding of the evils caused by the consumption of tobacco. A questionnaire with open and closed questions was used to quantify and characterize students smokers and nonsmokers, thus reaching the broadest possible student group that is or may be at risk of tobacco related diseases. Lectures and recreational activities were held in the State School Antonio Padilha, located in the city of Sorocaba , São Paulo . The audience was composed of students in elementary and middle school . Of the 171 students 82 were male and 89 female, 14 % of students or 24 students said they had used cigarettes. We note that among the major influences to start smoking habits, family and friends are the most cited, with the smaller influence of the communication media. Integrating data on pre and post-tests on the question "what is smoking for you ?" it was observed that children have knowledge of the dangers of tobacco smoking and associate it mainly to the disease, death and addiction. These answers were observed before the lecture and maintained immediately after the lecture and after 1 month's later. We concluded that young people know the evils of smoking, but because they are at a stage in life where reinforce curiosity and experimentation, are educational strong activities are important to reinforce and increase knowledge thus avoiding smoking initiation |
