Resumo: This dissertation searchs to understand daily and the imaginary one of a group of youngsters, in the periphery of the Zone East of São Paulo, with ages between 24 and 30 years, involved in criminal activities, that if auto-intitle malandros. Of the relation many times contradictory between the daily life and the imaginary one are that the heading appeared of the dissertation - "Between the dream and the death" - marking the existing conflict in the lives of the malandros between the onírica dimension of living in freedom and the cruellest side of the life, the imminent death. It is intended to understand the reality of the involved young in criminal activities from an internal perspective to the problem, being searched to bring its voices, its yearnings and dreams. The field research concentrated in the accomplishment of interviews in depth and stories of comment, basing itself, of the theoretical point of view, in the works of José Machado Pais, Marc Augé, Alain Touraine and Stuart Hall. With relation to the studied object, one are the following hypotheses which had been confirmed by the results of the field research: 1) the motivations of the malandros in relation to the ingression and permanence in crime connect it the process of constitution of its identities, to the paper that assume in its quarter of origin, to imaginary and myths the contemporaries on crime and freedom, shared by them; 2) these youngsters take for itself the denomination of malandros as an attempt to escape of the classification of delinqüentes/marginais imposed by the society, on the other hand and for another one, as landmark of a professionalization of the criminal activity; 3) the daily one of the malandros presents especificidades in relation to the society as a whole, especificidades these that assume a limiaridade character placing itself in the limit between legal and the illegal one, between youth and the adult life, between the center and the periphery
