Resumo: |
The present work tries to unravel, from the reading of Andrew Taylor Still's Autobiography (1828-1917), how the structuring of osteopathy occurred as a manipulative practice on which he focused most part of his life. During his trajectory in the troubled United States of the 19th century, Still integrated his life into medicine, whether in war or missions, when he learned regular medicine and came into contact with non-regular and manipulative medicine for the development of osteopathy. Throughout the nineteenth century, medicine also underwent transformations, a moment marked by the opening of new nonregular medicinal practices and, later, manipulative ones – homeopathy, thomsonian, indigenous medicine, hydropathy, massage, movement-cure, magnetic therapy. These movements intertwined Still's personal and professional path, establishing a boundary between other medicines and osteopathy |
