Resumo: The purpose of this research is to analyze the migration of Afghan Muslims to Brazil and the dynamics of the alterities experienced between these diasporic bodies and Brazilian society, understood as self-awareness based on knowledge of the other. Brazil has already authorized the issuance of 13,000 humanitarian visas for people of Afghan nationality who have been affected by the current humanitarian crisis in that country, which is currently dominated by the oppressive Islamic Taliban regime. To date, around 10,000 Afghans have immigrated to Brazil. This project is based on the assumption that, in order to reflect on migration and cultural identity, it must be understood that these issues are part of a context of interculturality that affects the lives of all migrants and natives. The aim of this dissertation is to analyze the theme of alterity and the possible invisibility of the Middle Eastern Muslim foreigner in Brazil, since the invisibility imposed on foreigners is an element that stands out when reflecting on the alterity impasses concerning migration and refuge. The premise behind this research is that, since the terrorist attack in New York, in the United States, on September 11, 2001, the way in which Western society looks at Middle Eastern Muslims has been greatly influenced and stigmatized. Based on theoretical references on international immigration, otherness, ethnicity and, in particular, Islamophobia, and using the ethnographic method, it was possible to uncover the real conditioning factors for the long stay of Afghans at an international airport in the largest South American metropolis since 2021, indicating obstacles in the welcome, although this has been declared as desirable in official Brazilian documents
