The general concern of this study is sustainable tourism, with regards to the policies and projects dedicated to stimulating tourism in the city of Ribeirão Pires. At first, after focusing on the history of this city which, due to its peripheral past, seeks an image that expresses an identity strong enough to insert itself in the tourist circuit, an analysis on the concept of image is performed. Through the three topics linked to producing touristic images: the speech of touristic vocation, the refunctioning of local resources and the traditions invented, the strategies for the city administration s policies and projects are problematized in their nature.Secondly, the spectre of the conflict is introduced in the three strategies mentioned above, in order to apprehend the conflicting universe between the principles of sustainability and the propositions for tourist marketing for the city of Ribeirão Pires. In that matter, the topics related to preserving, conserving and improving the quality of life of the population of spring areas through touristic activity are commented, as well as the hope of creating jobs and income through sustainable tourism. Does the reality of the population of Ribeirão Pires confuse itself with the touristic vocation spread out by the official speech? Would the touristification of the spring areas not produce new ways of dispossessing space through capital? What were the consequences brought by stimulating tourism, broadening opportunities or informalizing labor relations?These are the questions that sponsor reflection, and therefore what this study is intended for: exposing limits and unveiling the contradictions that guide the stimulation of sustainable tourism in the city of Ribeirão Pires |
