Resumo: This research sought to interpret the ways in which young graduates of Social Communication projects, in the area of audiovisual production, are entering adulthood, as social and political subjects. Data was produced through analysis of the projects with young people, Botando a Mão na Mídia BMM (Putting Your Hand in the Media) and Essa Tv é Nossa (This is Our Tv), developed in schools located in the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, in the early 2000s, under the coordination of the non-governmental organization (NGO) Centro de Criação de Imagem Popular CECIP (Center for Creation of Popular Image) and the life story of six young graduates of these projects. This data can contribute to the debate about the limits and possibilities of NGOs´s iniciatives with the young residents of the outskirts, both in the process of education and youth development, as in the creation of public policies aimed at this segment. The theme of transition to adulthood permeates this study considering that the social project can serve as a support for the future, helping young people enrich their repertoire and expand their range of choices from the confirmation or creation of their value system. This study was conducted in the area of Social Sciences, where youth narration is the methodological axis. It was found that the work of NGOs is still done in an attempt to eliminate inequalities and to establish citizenship. Such initiatives have produced social outcomes that should be considered especially in encouraging the development of human capacity
