Resumo: Today s society suffers a gradual loss of memory , because of the excess of information and velocity at which it comes and goes. This loss of memory can be perceived when we count the number of the groups that gather to exalt and fortify their culture, origins and history. In this study we search to comprehend the methods used by these groups, which feel historically marginalized, and how the processes of rebuilding memory emerge. The processes are always based on choices of icons that are a reference for determined cultures and their history, with the objective of establishing and propagating a common memory for the society that this group is inserted. Interestingly, we perceived that many of these movements have appeared since the 1980 s, and that they rebuilt their history and memories based on their past, searching to recover tradicional experiences, considered authentic, as a way to be different from a hegemonic culture that tries to convince society that development and modernity offers everything that man might need. This culture causes the groups and communities that do not follow the fast changes brought by modernization to be seen as bothersome and antiquated, which generates a feeling of resentment and an anxiety in these groups to demonstrate the multiplicity of existing and surviving cultures. From this literature, we have chosen the municipality of Silveiras, located in Vale do Paraíba do Sul in the state of São Paulo, to discuss these issues. In Silveiras we heard and learned of the importance and the meanings of the memory of these groups that base the recovery of their memory on one of their historical figures, who was the founder of the city, the tropeiro , through the celebrations and places built in his honor
