Resumo: This dissertation proposes a study on the mystical-religious vertex of the Indian psychoanalyst Wilfred R. Bion (1897-1979), focusing on the analysis of the concept of mysticism in his work. In addition to being a doctor and psychoanalyst, Bion graduated in history and studied various areas of the natural sciences, possessing deep knowledge in theology, philosophy, and mathematics. The influence of this knowledge, combined with his familiarity with Hindu oriental culture, contributed to the development of his system of thought, based on the use of paradoxes, contradictions, and illogic, aiming to break the purely logical and sensory cycle of the mind. He incorporated notions of transcendence and union with the divine, typical of Christian mysticism, and the search for the dissolution of the ego into a universal consciousness, present in Hindu tradition, as central elements in his understanding of mental expansion during the last period of his work, known as the mystical-religious vertex. By exploring the psychoanalytic model of Bion’s mystical experience, this research seeks to understand mysticism in the religious traditions mentioned in his work. It addresses Hindu devotional mysticism (bhakti), Islamic Sufism, Catholic mysticism from Saint Augustine, and the mystical approach in Zen Buddhism. Therefore, this research is not limited exclusively to the analysis of mysticism but also seeks to identify significant connections between psychoanalysis and religion. From a religious studies perspective, these connections allow for a deeper dialogue between mystical experiences and psychic processes, expanding the understanding of the relationship between the transcendental and psychoanalysis
