This work aims to understand the functioning of the Soviet punitive camps, especially during Stalin’s government, which represented a peak in the number of people incarcerated. In the first part, there is an analysis of what would be the main objectives of the Gulag. In the second, an approximation of its mechanisms, developments and procedures- which is possible thanks to a cartography of Chalámov’s Kolimá’s Tales, contributes to a better perception of the exercise of power inside and outside the spaces of punishment during the regime of that time
