Resumo: This piece of research aims to carry out a historical study of school psychology in the Municipal Department of Education of the local government of the city of São Paulo. The study is supported by the principles of Present History, understood as a field of studies of the 20th century history from the 1930s onwards, and by the current proposal of the Historiography of Psychology, specifically the social approach. Thus, it tries to respond to the challenge of constructing a critical history, articulating the history of psychology with that of society, showing their social and political dimensions. Documents were the raw material for this historical study. The analysis and interpretation of the organized materials allowed the identification of four periods in the action of psychology in the Municipal Department of Education of the local government of the city of São Paulo. They also helped in the elaboration of a narrative in which the author related the data to each other and to some of the events that mark the history of Brazil, of psychology and of the psychologist profession. In addition, the author’s memory was present in the backstage of the research, since she worked as a school psychologist in the School Psychology Service of the above mentioned Department from 1978 until its extinction. In this perspective, the purpose of the present study is to fill a gap in this area’s body of knowledge, that is, to offer a reference frame that portraits not only the origins of the School Psychology Service in the social and cultural process of the Brazilian reality, but also the changes that it underwent during the period of its existence. In this period, history can find its meaning, which is not restricted to São Paulo’s local government, and can offer a contribution to the history of psychology in Brazil
