Resumo: The subject of the research is the constitution of the genre ethic s code in banking. Two problems are focused. The first, related to the ample context and the concept of ethics itself, concerns the persistence in the ethic s codes of the rules of the ancient codes and the values and principles reasoned by Aristotle and Kant. The second, related to the texts of the codes, concerns to the minimum homogeneity they must present to fit as examples of the genre professional ethics code. Starting from the problematic above, the objectives are: to expose the context in which the ethics codes are settled, to establish parameters for the recognition of the generic statute of the professional ethic s code and to study the networks of meanings in the levels of message, the interaction and representation of the texts of five ethics codes of financial institutions. The first hypothesis is that the ethics codes of the financial institutions, raised to the condition of social institutions with legal status, present principles and values not highly directed toward the behaviour of the user and aiming more the promotion of a positive ethical image before the parts of society that interact with them. The second hypothesis is that the dissimilarity of the ethic s codes in banking, in reference to the way of editing principles, values and norms, raises a doubt, only seeming, about the pertinence to the same genre. Two linguistic currents base the research: the systemic-functional grammar and the enunciation linguistic. The authors of the first current are Halliday, Eggins and Neves. In the second we have, Benveniste and Charaudeau. The results confirm the hypotheses. The codes promote a positive image of the institution and this promotion is carried by means of linguistic procedures here analyzed
