Resumo: This thesis aimed to analyze the processing and work organization of social workers in the Paulista Penitentiary System, seeking to identify legal prerogatives and theoretical-methodological references that guide the work, problematize professional attributions and competences, systematize professional requests and responses to the needs and rights of the arrested and discharged population, tracing the different spaces in which work is carried out at the Secretariat of Penitentiary Administration of the State of São Paulo (SAP). For this, we rescued the historical context of origin and development of the prison system in the state of São Paulo and the incorporation of social workers, from the pioneering of the groups that implemented the Social Work in the institution. Focusing on the category work, core of the critical social theory, the methodological path was based on a broad bibliographical research, from which it was found the reduced academic production on the theme of professional work in the occupational space of the prison, hence the relevance of this. thesis. For this reason the data collection was based centrally on extensive documentary research, drawing on the historical collections of the various organs that make up the Paulista Penitentiary System, as well as external sources such as professional council, unions and professional associations in the social-legal area. The analyzes undertaken made it possible to verify the expansion of the Social Work intervention areas in the institution and the importance of SAP as a professional insertion space. But at the same time, it was possible to grasp the tensions between the impositions of institutional power on professionals as salaried workers and the social direction of the ethical-political project of social work, especially regarding the participation of social workers conducting the “criminological examination” and the “link validation interview”, topics of intense controversy at SAP. It was concluded that overcoming the routinization and bureaucratization present in professional work requires the expansion of the collective debate, the theoretical and methodological deepening of the professionals, as well as the strengthening of the collective debate and political organization
