Resumo: |
Contemporary pressures act as a scenario that shapes and conditions human behavior. This work aims to understand the characteristics of these pressures as a trigger for distress. Our hypothesis is that, due to consumption, the psychic pressures of contemporary times change morals and social relations and turn everyday life into a show stage. Desire without destination and ignorance of the Self, instigated by the characteristics of contemporary times, are key factors for the onset and growth of distress. The Us at the expense of the Self makes the subject hostage to external demands, with little ability to act on its own subjectivity. Consumption becomes the most sought-after destination to contain anguish, and dedication to work seems to be the most effective way of obtaining the objects – material or immaterial, such as prestige – that it can provide us. What are the psychological conditions that support such beliefs? Based on D.W. Winnicott's theory of the maturational process, and in particular on what the theory supports regarding the failures that can occur in the critical stage of dependence, this thesis seeks to investigate whether people in whose development such failures were serious are more subject to the type of distress under consideration. In this case, emotional fixation on work would be one of the ways to protect oneself from it: the constant search for activities that drive movement would take the place of the transitional object, therefore playing an essential role in the integration of the subject into his social environment. In such a scenario, a pathologic protective false self arises which, however, fails to control said distress: the latter appears in the form of a “compulsion to act”. Jean Paul Sartre’s concept of “project” proves to be useful as a complementary way of understanding this situation, since the ideal of dedication and the fear of failing in its completion come to integrate almost exclusively the perspective of the individual’s future. Thus, the conditions for complete exhaustion are placed – what has been called “burnout syndrome” in recent literature. A clinical case is then reported with the purpose of deepening the psychoanalytical understanding of these processes and discussing therapeutic resources that can help patients with this type of illness |
