Resumo: This paper analyzes the way in which the Normative grammar is imposed on the teaching of Portuguese language as the main object of knowledge in the intellectual formation of the Brazilian citizen. As theoretical support, we will use the assumptions of the History of Linguistics Ideas, which refer to the studies of all the acquired knowledge related to a language, at any given time, as a result of a metalinguistic reflection, or a non explicit metalinguistic activity (Cf. Auroux, 1992). Like all grammatical tradition is one part of linguistic ideas, to make history of the ideas allows us, on one hand, to work with the history of thoughts about the language in Brazil, even before the linguistics set up in its definite form; on the other hand, to work with the specificity on an inside look to the Science of the language, that is, it enables to evaluate theoretically the different theoretical affiliations and its consequences to the understanding of the object itself: the language itself (Cf. ORLANDI, 2001). Thus, after discussing the construction of the Normative grammar and the constitution of the standard rules in Brazil, we analyzed the imposition of the Normative grammar at schools, even with the release of the PCNs that directs the teaching of the Portuguese language to the formation of the critical individual-citizen, through the studies of written and oral texts, observing the various genres, and the linguistic analysis
