Resumo: | The demographic change associated with technological resources result in the survival of people with diabetes in old age. However, the increased incidence of diabetes in the world brings consequences to public health systems, as well as the entire population. This work has as main objective to study the prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) in the elderly of Porto Alegre and the characteristics and health status of this population. It was developed from a cross-sectional study conducted in a population-based sample of elderly with 60 years or more, developed on data from the Multidimensional Study of the Elderly in Porto Alegre (EMIPOA), conducted by the Institute of Geriatrics and Gerontology (IGG) of the Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS). The methodology of sampling was stratified random and proportional, including the residences of each census tract, as stipulated by the IBGE to Porto Alegre in 2000, with estimates of population in 2005. The study was carried out from December 2005 to September 2006 and covered two phases. In the first phase were assessed in 1078 elderly, through a household survey. All respondents were invited to attend the second phase of the study, in which 424 elderly attended. At this stage evaluation has been conducted by professionals multidisciplinary the faculties of medicine, physiotherapy, pharmacy, nursing, psychology, physical education and nutrition. We used the instruments of the scale of the capacity for Diabetic Self-care (ECDAC), subscale III, Scale of Barthel Index (BI) and Quality of Life (WHOQOL-Bref), farmacoterápico profile and physical examination. For the measurement of blood glucose, the elderly were the collection of plasma glucose, and were classified as diabetics according to the criteria of the Brazilian Society of Diabetes. The results were analyzed by SPSS 11. 5 statistical program. The elderly have signed the Statement of Free and Informed Consent. The results showed that 71. 8% are women, age ranged from 60 to 96 years, averaging 7. 8 years, 39. 2% are widowed and 36. 5% are married, 83. 1 % white71. 7 and 10. 9% black and 66. 8% had not completed the first grade. The prevalence of diabetes in the elderly population of 25. 7% (CI = 21,8-30,1) and, when adjusted for age and sex for the city, is 25. 4%. Of these, 20. 4% know the disease, and those who knew, 46. 2% were not any kind of treatment. The socio-economic conditions, quality of life and the characteristics of health of the elderly, are associated with the prevalence of diabetes. The absence of previous affect the elderly diabetic, raising the rates of mortality, co morbidity and functional disability. The relevance to seek such information serves to support and understand the whole process of the disease and devising programs that address public health burden of reducing the prevalence of diabetes. The results presented point to new possibilities, while they provide elements of reflection on the elderly population of Porto Alegre. |
