The sample was made up of 68% male elderly and 32% female elderly. The ages varied from 60 to 83, the average being 68,7 ± 5,1 years. Among the non-diabetics the average was 68. 7 and of the diabetics, 69,0. In relation to instruction, 40% of the elderly without DM and 29% of the elderly diabetics had between 1 to 4 years of education. Among the diabetic elderly, 47% had another health problem. High blood pressure affected 47% of them and heart disease 13%. Only 10% of the elderly with DM admitted to following a prescribed diet and 92% mentioned taking the prescribed medicine correctly. The general evaluation score results of quality of life of the WHOQOL-BREF was 73,5 ± 12,5 among the elderly without DM and of 66,2 ± 13,6 among the elderly with DM (P=0,007).The total score of the WHOQOL-BREF was 78,6±8,1 for the elderly without the DM and 73,8±9,5 for the elderly with diabetes (P=0,008). In the WHOQOL-OLD instrument and the general score for the non diabetics was of 79,6 ± 7,4 and 76,0 ± 11,5 for the diabetics, not having statistical significance between the two groups. In relation to social interaction and intimacy, there was a significant statistical difference (P=0,003) and (P=0,034) respectively, with worse evaluation for the diabetic elderly. The level of quality of life for the elderly with DM is different when compared to the elderly without DM. The total score of WHOQOL-BREF instrument and the WHOQOL-OLD had a worse evaluation between the elderly with DM.
