Technological progress and knowledge obtained in the area of transplants demarcate the development and the consolidation of the important place occupied by lung transplant in the treatment of advances lung diseases. In this development stands out the adjustment of criteria to the selection of candidates for this procedure. According to guidelines established by the Ministry of Health, these candidates, without exception, are carriers of terminal pneumopathology, with severe limitations, for these reasons they are dependents of oxygen, and with a life expectancy of 18 months or less than this. Thus, the situation of these candidates to lung transplant involves a double aspect: on one hand a pathology resolution is opened by the effective performance of the transplant; on the other hand the indication of this procedure assumes a clinical state very severe, in other words, the real risk of death is highlighted. It is understood that a condition of physical pain adds important psychic impact, proving the intrinsic relationship between body and psyche. From psychoanalysis theory, this dissertation aims to understand, from the experience of the candidates to a lung transplant, the complex experience of being in a list to wait for this procedure. Two sections were prepared about the issue: a theoretical and an empirical. The theoretical study, from a review of the psychoanalysis theory about the trauma, offers a relationship with the traumatic situation that involves the waiting for a lung transplant. The empirical section develops a qualitative studying and it aims to investigate the experiences of candidates who are waiting for a lung transplant. Eight patients were interviewed, six men and two women, who are part of the Lung Transplant Group of the Complexo Hospitalar da Santa Casa de Misericórdia de Porto Alegre.Through the technique of the Content Analysis, four final categories were identified and some vignettes were illustrated with candidates statement so called: singularity and complexity: the posture of awaiting of the transplant. Spaces shared on the awaiting: resonance box to the fear and expectations; the historicizing and bounds as resources to build of meaning before the excess and finally, the experience of helplessness and the care and reception through another person. For a discussion of the findings, psychoanalysis theory was used. The aspects found in this dissertation allow a deep understanding about the psychic suffering intrinsic to the traumatic experience of waiting for a lung transplant. The complex effects of this awaiting were highlighted and the severity of the diagnosis that put these patients in the condition of candidate of this procedure. In this context, it is highlighted the benefits that may come with the listening offered through psychoanalysis as a possible tool to build a possibility of assigning meaning to the psychic intensities in which configure a traumatic experience of the waiting of life.
