Resumo: The identity has been part of the present concern of historians regarding the establishment and adaptation of social groups in constant mobility. This paper focus on the construction of the Italian immigrants’ identity in Rio Grande do Sul between 1930 and 1945 based on the information obtained by researching the Correio-Riograndense Newspaper. First of all, a study is carried out on the exiting relation between the coming of the foreign clergy and the Italian immigrants through the process of the reform that the national church aimed to implant in the country during the 19th century. In this context, the establishment of a catholic press was closely related to the objectives of an effective influence of the clergy on of their followers. This press, specially the one located in the Italian colonial region, voiced the church ideas among a highly clerical society, trying to shape the image and represent the interests of the local land workers. The 1930’s and 1940’s will promote experiences in which the identity of this community will look for a means of communication with the national society and at the same time will reinforce its specific European characteristics. Catholicism, fascism and nationalism are interconnected in this discussion and portray the scenery where the local immigrant identity will be redefined.
