This work consists of two distinct and complementary parts: one essay and one fiction. The first part analyzes some key moments of the author`s training as a writer of prose, namely the path from reading to writing, then from the manuscript to the book and, finally, from the short story to the novel, all of which is based on his personal experience, and applies, to some extent, to a number of Brazilian prose writers of his generation. The second part displays an unpublished novel entitled “Bariyer” that was composed especially for this work. In combining reflection and fiction, the assemblage of these two parts constitutes an attempt to show not only the elements participating in the writer`s training process, but also the actual result of his creative work.
