This dissertation analyses in a sociological prospect in establishing the new model of religious education in public schools in the Rio Grande do Sul, following the Federal Law 9. 475/97 which establishes that the religiosus education is part of the basic formation of the citizens and forbids any kind of indoctrination and proselytism. This work is a discussion about the history the religiosus education in Rio Grande do Sul and in Brazil and the shocks occurred in the past and in the present, among the laic groups and the Catholic Church, which is still the more engaged group religiosus to implement this subject. It analyses the issues of secularization, laity, pluralism, and relation among State and Churches in Brazil. It shows that the new supraconfessional aspect of the religiosus education reflects, in part, the pluralization in Brazilian religiosus field and therefore the increasing pressure on public agents to treat with equality the different religiosus beliefs. At the same time, however, it demonstrates the persistence in Rio Grande do Sul of confessional practices and practices of proselytism contrasting with the legal proposal of non-confessional and pluralist religiosus education.
