Resumo: | The present theses aims at analyzing the way German immigrants and their descendants got organized in order to participate in the political scene of Rio Grande do Sul in the 19th century. The research focuses on the so called “exponential” peasants of German background, in an attempt to identify which means they used to enter politics and be assigned positions that were not meant to be theirs. Concerning the space and time categories, the definition of such information is connected to the circulation of the historical agents present in the research. Therefore, it was necessary to establish a certain area, which was called mega-space São Leopoldo- Rio Grande do Sul North Shore (SL-LNRS), where the families Diefenthäler and Voges made business, made friends and formed family bonds. Regarding chronology, the defining dates were the German immigrants’ arrival in Rio Grande do Sul in 1824 and the Republic political turn in 1889. The methodology used to achieve the research objectives needed to be one of “case study”, which unveiled an extremely dynamic world regarding the search for political participation. There was also a concern to link the present work to the “new” political history, so it would be possible to analyze the relations between a group of German peasants called “exponential” and the small and medium local leaderships of the hosting society. |
