The present study analyses the space of memory and of women in the portuguese patriarchal society, on A Sibila, by Agustina Bessa-Luís, based on the studies of Iuri Lotman, Mikhail M. Bakhtin and Georg Lukács. The theoric part is divided in two moments. Initially, some basic concepts are defined like “novel”, “character”, “memory” and “space”. After, the last topic is studied, focusing the spacial configuration of character, the poetic of the space, the spacial structure of the narrative, and the space of women in the society and in the portuguese literary life. Finally, the novel written by Agustina Bessa-Luís is analysed, establishing relations between the spacial representation of the characters and of the memory on the narrative, evidencing how the writer shows the feminine condition and identity in the patriarchal society.
