Resumo: HIV soropositive and AIDS patients, as well as the AIDS epidemia itself have gained much interest of mental health researchers lately. In special, attention has been giving to its psychological dimension, infection development and the individual’s social and emotional vulnerability. With the intent to explore this theme, two studies were conducted. On the first one, a literature review was performed encompassing the fundamental aspects of this research. This is entitled “Health Psychology’s and social support to Chronic Illness: HIV/AIDS”. The second study was empirical, and entitled “Relation between depressive symptoms, social support, quality of life and adherence in HIV/AIDS Patients”. In the literature review the focus was on the applicability of Health Psychology theories in patients with chronic diseases, Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). Besides this theme analysis, we raised few questions regarding the impact of perceived social support on adherence to treatment of HIV/AIDS patients. Emphasis was given on the positive aspects of human development, such as social support, which helps both the resilience process and improves quality of life (QOL) of those individuals. The empirical article aimed to evaluate depressive symptoms, social support, treatment adherence and QOL in HIV/AIDS patients. We also investigated possible correlations between those variables and biological markers (CD4+ and viral load) in a sample of 63 patients. The data was collected from two distinctive places, a STD public ambulatory and a non-governmental institution, both in Porto Alegre. The instruments were a socio-demographic questionnaire with clinical information, World’s Health Organization Quality of Life Questionnaire (WHOQOL-HIV Bref), Adherence to Anti-retroviral Treatment Questionnaire (CEAT-VIH), Beck’s Inventory for Depression (BDI) and Social Support Inventory for People Living with HIV/AIDS.In order to investigate the possible interaction between the psicosocial aspects and biological markers, depressive symptoms, social support, adherence and QOL, a Pearson’s Correlation analysis 11 was performed. The comparison between groups was through Analysis of Variance statistical technique (ANOVA). The results show no significant association between any biological marker and socio-demographic data. There was also no evidence of correlation between such markers and the variables depressive symptoms, social support, QOL and adherence. Results suggest that social support contributes to the resilient process of HIV/AIDS patients, enhancing QOL and serving as a protective factor to health.
