Resumo: This paper has as its main objective to, through a theoretical prism of Generative Syntax and Formal Semantics in an interface, promote the comparison of three languages: Brazilian Portuguese, English and Romanian, in relation to the notion of modality. This work is divided in three main parts: the first one elaborates on fundaments of the Generative Syntax that are relevant to the study of modality, such as the classical notion of modality originated in the works of Aristotle, Kripke‟s possible worlds semantics and Kratzer‟s Modal Logic theory, in which propositions are not only true or false in a determined possible world, they are sets of possible worlds that can be ordered. The third and last part builds an object of study from the comparative point of view of the application of the approached fundaments in the two previous parts to the analysis of modality in the three languages. It is concluded that research of modality still has a long way to go, but the more updated approaches that take into consideration interfaces such as the one of Semantics with Syntax have had better and more elucidative results.
