Resumo: This study has as general aim to verify the usage of American English vowels as a second language (i ː, a ː, ɔ ː, u ː, ɜ ː, ɪ, æ, ɔ, ʊ, ɛ, ʌ, ə) by Brazilian native speakers. lt was outlined five specific aims: to investigate through a production test if English learners make a distinction among the second language vowels that are not the same as the mother language ones; to check, through a awareness test of the learner’s own production, if they are conscious about the different vowels in English using a awareness test of their own production; to search if there is interlingual transfer (from Portuguese - English) of the learner’s mother language system in the second language; to check if the learners’ mother language transfer tends to decrease in advanced level learners; to find out which second vowels learners acquire earlier, being capable to produce them in a free and easy way. The sample consisted of thirty Brazilian speakers students in English learning process of a private high school located in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The production, perception and own production phonemic awareness were evaluated. The applied tests present tasks related to sentences production using the target vowels, perception and phonemic awareness. The results were evaluated by a quantitative and qualitative analysis. They were also evaluated statistically using the SPSS program and they show an intrinsic relation among the perception, production and phonemic awareness. The results shows that the three tests applied to the students (production, perception and awareness) are closed related. To produce the vowels in English, the students need to note them previously, in other words, it is necessary a reflection and perception, so after that, it is possible to manipulate the unit sounds. Considering the results it is possible to conclude that it is necessary to develop awareness tasks in second language classroom, such as phonemes, rhymes and sounds, which help the students to improve their performance in the acquisition of a second language and recognize structures that are not part of their inventory sound. The teacher’s explicit system of sounds in the classroom with jokes, games, music, everything involving playfulness aspect is very relevant to the acquisition a development of the second language phonemic awareness.
