The present study discusses about the job of the social worker in the contradictory socio - occupational space of the Family Health Program (FHP´s). It discusses how the social worker develops his work process in the FHP´s of the North region of Rio Grande do Sul state, more precisely, in the cities that compose the 6ª Coordination of the State Health. It was done a quality research for an explanatory study in that region, oriented by the critical – dialectical method. The construction of the theme passes by main historic landmarks of the Brazilian health politic until the FHP as a strategy of the National Basic Care Politic to put in order the model of the health, and it is the entry door for the Unified Health System (SUS Brazilian term). The investigation theme is relevant to the social work in the sense of that, although it still not composes the basic team of the Health Ministry, with the enlargement of the FHP´s in all Brazil has been included the social worker among the professionals that work in the program. The research seeks to unravel the contradiction of this space, showing as indeed the job of the social workers is effectuated, pointing to the professional contributions to this program and its basic team. The analysis of the study directs to the limits and possibilities faced by the social workers in the FHP, and that it is inseparable of the productive reestruturation process and the transformations on the job’s world. However, the Social Work, while as a profession inserted in a social-technical work division, is sued to answer the doubts of the social questions and to develop competences to act in the management, formation and social politics planning. So, potencializing the political-ethical project, guided by the principle of chap’s emancipation, it strengthens democratic principals, in the perspective of rights assurances, defended in the Sanitary reform, UHS (SUS) and by profession.
