This work, linked to research line of Criminology and Social Control of Post-Graduate in Criminal Sciences at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul, with the support of CNPq, deals with the role of the police investigation in clarification and processing of crime, and how the procedures are triggered by means of which the police selectivity, where the object of empirical research are police investigations in the development stage and has sent to other instances, and the ethnography of police stations in the city of Porto Alegre. The work sought to further research on crime control through the traditional model of response to crime currently adopted in Brazil, seeking to understand the place of the police investigation in the context of the criminal justice system and possible alternatives aimed at institutional improvement both in terms of greater efficiency, as the realization of the guarantees and fundamental rights of the citizen investigated. The theme was developed through a literature review and field analysis of police investigations and the production of quantitative data from them, interviews and ethnography in police stations. For the production of primary data was adopted a time line for the period between the years 2007 and 2008, considering merely the investigation of crimes of murder and robbery that took place in Porto Alegre.
