Resumo: The current study aimed to verify through the teachers’ and students’ reports the pedagogical practices developed in the Young and the Adult Education (YAE) and their selfimage and self- esteem. Eight individuals were interviewed - six adult students inserted in totality 1 and totality 2 in the Young and the Adult Education from Porto Alegre city and two of their teachers. As methodology, it was used a case study in a quantitative and qualitative approach. The used tools were an interview with open answers to the teachers and to the students; an observation form of the pedagogical practice, a field diary, and a self- image and self -esteem questionnaire (the last three ones were used as complement of the analysis). The data analysis was realized through the analysis of the content a priori 1. Self-image (SI) and self- esteem (SE) – showing that the students’ SI and SE levels seem not to be real because of the lack of critical consciousness – present in the students with little education. On the other hand, the teachers’ SI and SE levels seem to be real because of their education and maturity; and posteriori: 2. Social, professional and personal experiences revealed that the adult student brings to the school all his personal experiences and they need to found the pedagogical practices of YAE. 3. Learning reports and learning expectations/motivations showed that most of the students seem to build their learning expectations and motivations from the social relationships in the childhood: reading and writing, pointing out the interpersonal relationships set in an educational environment which can help composing new expectations in relation to the teaching. 4. Life and future prospect showed that most of the students see in the school the possibility of social independence and a small group searches in the education to improve jobs;5. Teacher as a cultural model showed that the adult students have their teacher as a socially built cultural model, pointing out the teacher’s social commitment. It is necessary to show here the importance of a continued formation that reveals renewed pedagogical practices in the YAE, founded in the personal experiences of the adult students. It’s recommended to make a deep study in the Young and Adult Education field and in the self- image and self- esteem where the understanding possibilities in these thematic areas are not depleted. However, we hope that this study comes to help the improvement of the educators in general and in special to the educative context of the Young and Adult Education.
