The goal of this paper is to study the connection between the commercial opening with the evolution of the items exported by Rio Grande do Sul. First of all, the economical and regional events that guided the commercial opening in Brazil are analyzed. Particularly, the evolution of the exportations by the state are studied, together with the reprimarização and the supposed regressive insertion of the items exported by the gauchos, and the dominating factors of its performance. Then, a comment on the gaucho exporter profile would be made, as well as its main exported products and their receiving markets. Based on this information, using as source of dada the Fundação de Economia e Estatística (FEE), the evolution of the price and amount of the main exported products between 2003/2007 would be graphically analyzed. It is checked that the impacts of the commercial opening, related to the performance of the cheapest products was positive, confirming the reprimarização of the items exported by the gauchos. Although, there is a strong need for the State to direct its exportations to sectors that show a higher international dynamism and a better technological content.
