Resumo: The changes occurred in Brazil in the 90’s decade, particularly into the national market, wich was set opened for direct competition to foreign products. According to this, the Brazilian suppliers of footwear industry had preceded to changes in many areas, such as product development, production and manufacturing, logistic, sales and management. With the advance of China and other Asian countries in the international footwear market, occupying the space of Brazilian shoes, the companies have been forced to search for new strategies to play in the international market and into the local as well. That means to adopt strategies to develop products capable of facing these new standards of competition, searching on the competitive environment the information to get best support to strategical decisions. In this context, this work has the main objective to evaluate the most important characteristics of polyurethane synthetic leather, in order to be use the information to develop strategies of product development for a company that produce this material for shoes manufacturing industry. Based on the interviews this work shows that visual aesthetics and adherence are the most important aspects to be considered to develop strategies of product development for that company, in contrast with the viewpoint, which usually focus on the low price and absorption features.
