This thesis studies the space of childhood in the narrative of the Portuguese writer António Lobo Antunes. The object of analysis are the follow in novels: O arquipélago da insónia (2008), Que cavalos são aqueles que fazem sombra no mar? (2009), Sôbolos rios que vão (2010), Comissão das lágrimas (2011) and Não é meia noite quem quer (2012). The study shows how the childhood theme is fictionally revisited through the memory of a usually traumatic past. Thus, it starts a reflection turning to the other novels of the author, which comprise a period of 33 years (from 1979 to 2012). To sustain the hypothesis that memory is a constitutive element in the narratives of António Lobo Antunes, the study examines how the characters rearticulate the past through childhood memory and, several times, before the supremacy of death. It analyzes the reconstruction (and narrative) of previous moments adopting the contributions of Paul Ricoeur, Sigmund Freud, Márcio Seligmann-Silva and Walter Benjamin.
