Resumo: This dissertation discusses the role of Sociology on the education of young students starting High School in 2009, the year in which the current curriculum for the State of Sao Paulo was implemented with Sociology as a discipline. Sociology became mandatory in all public and private schools across the nation in 2008 for all three High School years after a long process of consolidation which started in 1890 and which was marked with a series of controversies. With this new scenario in place, this study verifies the contribution of the Sociology discipline in improving students as people, including their ethical education as well as the development of their intellectual autonomy and critical thinking, preparing them to be active citizens based on what they have learned in High School. This study heard young students from public and private schools who graduated from High School in 2011. This research was based on Adorno s, Horkheimer s and Bauman s theories. The results indicate that, despite the crisis and contradictions that the High School education system is facing nowadays in respect to what is proposed and what is asked by the contemporary society, it is possible to infer that the Sociology discipline has had an important role for these young students education, as it brings out concepts and themes that generate reflexive debates about issues such as political participation, the media and social movements.
