Resumo: In this paper we try to reflect on the reality of the ACTC s Marias, women who accompany their children or stepchildren either cardiac or heart transplantated in heart treatment at Hospital das Clínicas, in São Paulo. Through the study and understanding of the educational act Maria Maria, a project that is part of one of the actions accomplished by this institution, we try to identify if such work is really effective in those women s lives. Providing them real opportunities for getting a job, putting them in charge of their own lives or if it only works as an income generator for the maintenance of the project itself? The subjects of our study are six women, from six different locations and ranging the age from 20 to 50. This study characterized as qualitative, is delineated by using literature as primary methodology oral history of life. Patto (2005), Demo (2006), Gohn (2000), Melo Neto and Froes (2001), are the main authors of the discussions on the third sector, philanthropy and non-formal education. Fonseca (1997), Freitas (2002) and Josso (2004), in the treatment of the methodology chosen. The conclusion of the readings and the analyses of the testimonies identified the struggle between idealism and pragmatism, in contrast to the raw reality of many Marias, involving decisions that would provide the contours of welfare, their relations with the ACTC and the omission of the state, and thus we concluded that the project uses the mothers for its existence and the mothers make use of the project to strengthen themselves emotionally, interpenetrating in the construction of new historical subjects.
