Resumo: Introduction: Physiotherapy plays an important role in the treatment of different types of hospitalized patients and its intervention provides benefits to patients, which directly reflects on the operational results of hospital institutions. Therefore, it is pertinent to answer the following question: What is the relationship between the number of physiotherapists and the cost, length of stay and mortality rate of patients admitted to public hospitals in the State of São Paulo? Objective: To assess the relationship between the number of physiotherapists available per bed and the indicators: VIH (Value of Inpatient Hospitalization), length of stay (LOS) and mortality rate (MR) for all inpatiente of hospitals, patients admitted to the ICU, hospitalized for stroke, heart failure (HF) and community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in public general hospitals in the city of São Paulo for the year 2019. Methodological procedures: Secondary retrospective data collected through DATASUS were used for all public hospitals in the city of São Paulo in 2019. Pearson's correlation tests were applied for parametric variables and Spearman's test for non-parametric variables. The indicator selected as an independent variable was the number of hours worked by physiotherapists per bed (FTEF) and the dependent variables were VIH, LOS and MR. Results: A positive correlation was found between the number of physiotherapists and the VIH when taking into account all hospitalized patients (p = 0.001), and when considering only patients admitted for stroke (p = 0.001), HF (p = 0.001) and CAP (p = 0.01). In addition, there was a negative correlation between HTF and LOS for ICU patients (p = 0.04), stroke (p = 0.04) and CAP (p = 0.04). Furthermore, HTF had a negative correlation with MT when were analyzed all inpatients (p = 0.04), ICU patients (p = 0.01) and patients with HF (p = 0.03). Conclusion: It is concluded that the availability of physical therapists was related to the operational results of public hospitals in São Paulo in 2019. Thus, the increase in the number of physiotherapists in hospitals has led to an increase in hospitalization costs, a reduction in the death rate and length of hospital stay for most patients.
