Resumo: Companies that drive their business strategies through the implementation of projects need to overcome increasing challenges to their survival in the market. Aspects such as competitiveness, agility, complexity, new technologies, regulation and standardization require the companies manage a large volume of information to support their decision. Project Management Information Systems - PMIS can adequately meet this demand, managing information reliably and in real time, making it a natural way for most companies seeking to accelerate performance management of your projects. Analyze the current stage of structure and use of Project Management Information System in SMEs for industrial automation segment is the main goal of this study. To achieve this objective the research opted for the development of a multiple case study, qualitative, applied to six industrial automation companys, through questionnaires and personal interviews to present a detailed analysis about how the surveyed companies develop and apply project management information system, basic mapping features (knowledge areas of PMBOK) and advanced features (governance dashboards, critical success factors, KPIs and metrics applied to projects), based on good practices from PMI (2008) and studies Kerzner (2011) respectively, which can be noted in the form of results, that the peculiar aspects of management of SMEs as centralization of power, informal processes and lack of transparency negatively affect how projects are developed. Are also pointed out various shortcomings in project management of these SMEs. Another result in this study concerns the limitations of the companies surveyed in relation to the strategic management of projects, regard information management, governance and indicators. The main contributions to the practice of this study are targeted to assist SMEs to reflect on the effectiveness of their management processes, to consider the treatment of strategic issues in their projects and identify key opportunities to enhance the use of best management practices in projects using SIGPs.
