Resumo: This research aims to describe and analyze the social representations built by math teachers at play in the Grande São Paulo about difficulties in learning mathematics. The object of this research focuses on the experiences of these teachers of basic education with the teaching of mathematics. The theoretical assumptions underlying this research were: the concept of social representations (Moscovici, 1978, 2004; Jodelet, 2001, 2002) and the training of mathematics teachers (Lorenzato and Fiorentini, 2001, 2006; Valente, 2002; Miorim, 1998). This study was conducted with mathematics teachers in action. The main motivation of this work is to contribute to the reflection on the training of teachers of mathematics at undergraduate, barriers and improvements in teacher training and its relationship to student learning in the discipline. The results of this study point to the fact that the representations that teachers have their students who have low income lead them to reflect on their own pedagogical action and define the action to be taken against these students.
