Resumo: This study proposes to analyze the role played by Physical Education in the Vargas Era. During the 1930s and early 1940s the advance of industrial capitalism translated into very subtle forms of domination, in which even the subjectivity, character, and personality of individuals were projected to control. Formulated by intellectuals, military and scholars of the subject and assumed by the state from 1937, Physical Education assumed the status of discipline capable of making the Brazilian people prepared to follow the development of the country. This discipline was given the role of aiding in building a strong nation. This would be achieved by investing in the body, by the physical and moral regeneration of the Brazilian people, making them strong, healthy, eugenized, useful and productive. At the same time, it would be possible to introject into individuals values such as order, discipline, respect and obedience. The Army, a major activator of Physical Education at that time, sought to lead the national construction and involved this practice in its objectives of militarization of society. With the consolidation of political authoritarianism from 1937, the State integrated Physical Education and its regenerative action in the ideology of national construction then formulated, bringing a new outline, fascist orientation, to the project of building nationality from this practice.
