Resumo: |
This research focuses on the mediumistic, ritualistic, symbolic and visual performance of Edelarzil Munhoz Cardoso, better known as the "Cotton Woman" or "Cotton Medium", who is alleged to have the gift of performing physical and spiritual healing of negative forces through the materialization of objects in cotton. Specifically we hold to its religious performance and symbolic universe. We start from the theory of the Religious Cultural Matrix and present its life trajectory. In the perspective of Visual Culture and Material, we document images that could give us clues about its symbolic universe and finally analyze its imaginary, permeated in its space, its rite and its performance in order to understand its role within the Brazilian popular religiosity. We use as theoretical-methodological reference the reflections on Brazilian Religious Cultural Matrix of Mendonça, Bittencourt Filho, Darcy Ribeiro; the theories of Hoffmann-Horochovski and Quintana on the benzedeiras. Panofsky, Renders and Eliade for studies on Material and Visual Culture and spaces. The studies of Vilhena, Gennep, Turner to analyze the Schechner rites for the reflections on the performance of Edelarzil Munhoz Cardoso. In addition to image documentation, we also use performance interpretation through media files. All our research has led us to a better approximation of the religious imagery of the "Cotton Woman" showing us that this has much more to reveal through research as to its originality and religious hybridism within Brazilian religiosity. |
