Resumo: Research and reflection on public policies of teaching career are important to understand the mechanisms that contribute to the scenario of increasing social devaluation, emotional and physical overload of Brazilian teachers. This research aims to investigate the teacher appreciation based on statutes and career paths and pay (PCR) and on data collected from interviews with teachers of São Bernardo do Campo (SBC) and São Caetano do Sul (SCS). These municipalities were chosen due to their high positions of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and the Municipal Human Development Index (MHDI), considering that, according to 2018 data, SBC holds the 16th highest GDP and SCS ranks number 1 in the MHDI amongst over 5,500 cities in Brazil. Therefore, we question how such expressive performances in economic and social terms of both municipalities are reflected in the appreciation of teachers. From a qualitative approach, the methodological procedures of this research consist of the documentary study of the municipal statutes and PCR and semi-structured interviews with teachers of the studied cities. The data were analyzed in the light of national laws that advocate the new guidelines for the construction of career paths for teachers and the authors of educational policies, teacher appreciation and quality of life at work. We also present several sources, such as demographic data and publications of different representations. The results provide a panel composed of hits, contradictions and misconceptions which signal the need for changes and improvements in municipal policies. The study is relevant to the reflection and awareness of teachers and future teachers about the importance of PCR and the ways and pathways of teacher appreciation, for the creation of different perspectives on the region, also contributing to the awareness of education managers regarding the health of the teacher's body and mind, the quality of life at work and the motivational character of well-structured and effective statutes and PCR.
