Resumo: This dissertation aims to analyze the participation of IBGE in the evaluation process of the Plano Plurianual 2004-2007. The study begins by the context of the public management improvement and the theoretical basis on the subject of evaluation programs, their indicators and the perspective of effect. The planning in the Brazilian public administration went through several phases, each one with its particular characteristics, reaching the current model, the Plano Plurianual, which integrates planning and budget, seeks to give transparency to the objectives and priorities of government and improve the management directing it to results. The IBGE has duties defined by law, an important role in the development of the country and recognized competence, that warrant to the society as the main coordinator and producer of statistical and geosciences information. So aims to verify the real involvement of the IBGE and the information disclosed by him in the programs of the PPA 2004-2007, giving a greater focus in the evaluation process beca use of their relevance for public management. Thus, the research used methods as the literature research, documents review and questionnaires with key people who are the program managers of the Plano Plurianual. The search was restricted to programs considered , as finalistic and services for the State. The results in this study demonstrate that the actions of the IBGE is far from its expertise recognized nationally and internationally, the credibility and quality of its information, and its perceived relevance by the government to the management process of PPA. It can be concluded that the IBGE has a wide field of action in order to contribute effectively to sustainable development of the country.
