Resumo: Contemporarily, researchers from the administration, economics, marketing fields and related areas have analysed the behaviour of entrepreneurs from two paradigms: Causation and Effectuation. The entrepreneurial approach called Causation, a classic paradigm of studies, is characterized by the prediction of future scenarios and the prior definition of goals to guide the forms of insertion and performance in a market. The approach called Effectuation, initially described by Saras Sarasvathy (2001a), is centered on the entrepreneur's belief in the possibility of building future scenarios set from the means already acquired, thus characterized by a nonpredictive orientation and higher performance. adaptability to contingencies. The objective of the research was to comparatively investigate attitudinal transformations in the conduct of the same entrepreneur in the constitution and development of the companies “Preparatório Evolução em Concursos” (PeC) and “Editora Brasil Sabendo”, aiming to understand how the Effectuation and Causation approaches are useful tools to understand different entrepreneurial performances. The method chosen to carry out the research was autoethnography, given the fact that the entrepreneur and the researcher are the same individual. During the autoethnographic investigation, the description and study of the carried out cases by the entrepreneur-researcher were assisted by the analysis of interviews of three categories of informants, who participated in the establishment and development of the projects (partners, employees and students), by the analysis of representative documents from the two companies (derived from the entrepreneur's personal archive) and by the correlation between the data, the autoethnographic report and the studies by Saras Sarasvathy and other researchers on the Causal and Effectual entrepreneurial approaches. From this methodological approach, it was possible to observe that the constitution and the initial trajectory of the companies differed substantially, as well as establishing significant similarities with the Causal and Effectual entrepreneurial approaches. The first company created by the entrepreneur, “Preparatório Evolução em Concursos”, was predominantly based on Effectuation, although it was not possible to establish a correlation between all the events and the principles described by the researchers studied; the second company, established at a time when the entrepreneur had a better understanding of the market in which he intended to operate, was guided by Causation. Finally, it has been concluded that, even though every entrepreneurial trajectory is unique and cannot be framed in pre-established models, the Causal and Effectual approaches are important tools to understand and analyze the entrepreneurial behavior.
