Resumo: This dissertation aims to examine the social function of music in the BEC s (Basic Ecclesial Communities), which has biblical roots and is present in the current days. The first part approaches the social function of music in the Bible until the current days with a brief narrative of the history of western music. The second part studies the music in the BEC s and the Liberation Theology as an important part of the musical context, where the ideals of the Liberation Theology are disclosed by the music, i.e., music becomes the living voice of the Liberation Theology. It is also an analysis of the music plays and other musical styles performed in other Christian churches. The third part analyzes the impact of the liberation music played in the BEC s, where the musical culture has produced a concrete political activism, inspiring their members to hold public offices in order to formalize public polices for the lower classes. The study reports the current status of theses communities as well as the liberation music. It figures the future of the musical movement and its contribution to a new fair and egalitarian society.
