Research on disposal behaviors has traditionally concentrated on semi-durable and durable goods, often overlooking the primary waste stream generated by consumers: post-consumption organic material. Similarly, market studies have largely neglected to explore the complexities of waste markets, despite their substantial annual turnover exceeding R$ 30 billion. Within this context, this study investigates a novel service model, subscription-based composting, and its transformative impact on consumer disposal practices and the domestic waste market. Through a phenomenological inquiry with key stakeholders in this system, the findings indicate that subscription-based composting positions consumer action as a pivotal driver for the sustainability of this market. Consequently, this research refines the taxonomy of disposal decisions by incorporating a practice of discarding with the intent to recycle, and by illuminating the intricate relationships between permanent disposal practices and actors within the domestic waste market. For businesses operating in this market, the study offers opportunities for innovative service offerings that align with evolving consumer preferences and sustainability goals. For policymakers, this work underscores the imperative for governments to enact policies that facilitate and encourage citizen engagement in more sustainable disposal practices. |
