Resumo: Studying culture implies investigating the multiplicity of social relations that are formed to the detriment of coexistence in community, mediated by the communication media and legitimated by material/symbolic assets. Women’s studies have contributed to comprehending contemporary society, specially the most current ones, which investigate issues of gender and sexuality and question class and ethnic relations. By incorporating themes related to the feminine universe into their plots, Brazilian telenovelas produce and reproduce gender representations, ways of being, lifestyles and consumer patterns that result in the circulation, reception and redefinition of meaning. In this approach, I had defined the following research problem: “How have women-related discourses transformed themselves over the years in Gloria Perez’s telenovelas and in Brazilian society; and how do such transformations manifest themselves in the daily lives of female receivers/consumers of such media products?”. The study’s objective is to analyze both the transformations in the women-related discourses produced by Gloria Perez’s telenovelas and the reception of messages by Brazilian women in the light of Women’s and Gender Studies. Among the specific objectives I highlight: a) Identify several temporal and social markers of consumption via the characters; b) Compare the media discourses and social transformations that have occurred over the years in Brazil; c) Check the manner in which female telenovela receivers/consumers give new meanings to the gender representations presented in the narratives. A longitudinal qualitative study of a multimethodological nature was chosen, which was included an analysis of five of Gloria Perez’s TV soaps that aired between the 1990s and 2017: Barriga de Aluguel (Globo, 1990), Explode Coração (Globo, 1995), América (Globo, 2005), Salve Jorge (Globo, 2012) and A Força do Querer (Globo, 2017). The scenes were analyzed via a constructed week sample, which consists of recording alternate days of the program. In order to analyze the discourses related to women in Gloria Perez’s telenovelas and in the statements of our female interviewees, I adopted French Discourse Analysis (FDA). To do so, I had brought Fiorin, Gregolin, Mangueneau and Orlandi into the discussion. The second phase of the study was consisted of in-depth interviews of Brazilian women residing in Brazil and in Boston (USA). The sample was made up of women between 20 and 50 years of age in order to examine the generational and temporal aspects. The study was based on interdisciplinary theories such as Cultural Studies, Reception Studies and Consumer Studies.
