Resumo: |
This research conducts an exploratory study with residents of the municipality of Jauru/MT who migrated to the United States, stayed there for periods longer than one year and returned to their hometown. The objective of the study was to know, mainly, how migration and return affected the standard of living and professional activity of these returned migrants. This dissertation is dedicated to overcoming the little knowledge of this phenomenon. The study of migrants who go and return on their own, almost always illegally, as is the case of many residents of Jauru and other Brazilian regions, still seems to be neglected in research. The study was carried out through a multiple case study of the trajectory of seven migrants, which was studied through in-depth interviews. The dissertation also sought, through temporal bracketing of these trajectories, to identify patterns and make propositions about the relationship between aspects of the migrants' trajectories and the evolution of their living standards, upon return. It synthesizes these propositions in a conceptual framework. The main results indicate the search for better living conditions as the main motivator for migration, but also regional aspects related to the municipality of Jauru/MT. Another motivator is the “pull” and “push” factors, the first being perceived more appropriately. Another important result concerns the remittances of most migrants to their families, which later became capital for investments in the municipality, with undertakings and/or acquisition of land and cattle, which generated evident improvements in the standard of living of most of the interviewees, after returning to Brazil. The experience, knowledge and skills acquired by some of the interviewees during their period in the USA influenced their current professional choices. The main contribution of the study is to provide a picture of a specific region of the country and deepen the knowledge on the subject a little more, allowing new research to be carried out. The dissertation also contributes to the knowledge of the issue of return migration by suggesting questions for future research. |
