Resumo: | The aim of this study was to evaluate the community involvement with social and environmental problems Paracatu (MG) under the gaze of their representatives. Documentary analysis was used to characterize the municipality and questionnaires answered by representatives of Neighborhood Associations in order to raise awareness about community participation in health promotion actions such as healthy settings, mostly related to essential services like education, health, urbanization, sanitation, culture and recreation, transportation, violence and environmental degradation. Among the 30 existing Neighborhood Associations in Paracatu, 24 answered to the questionnaire. Regarding the perception of the representatives on community participation, 60% considered that the community has little involvement in activities undertaken by the entities. With respect to essential public services, the representatives of entities located in the periphery, related lack of kindergartens, schools, health services, roads, and sanitation, culture and leisure activities. With respect to garbage collection, 37.5% of respondents believe that the current service is inadequate. All respondents reported perceiving environmental degradation in the municipality. The representatives said that the main work of the organization, is to deal with violence (robbery, drug trafficking and prostitution), followed by work to combat hunger and poverty. With respect to actions taken by authorities to combat or discuss environmental problems in the past year, only 25% made joint efforts for cleaning, and more than 90% of the representatives said they had never held public protests against environmental problems and few (8.3% ) carried out petition against environmental degradation. It was concluded that, although representatives have a good understanding of socio-environmental problems of the municipality, community action even more active with respect to social problems than with respect to environmental problems. You need to develop actions to strengthen community action in coping with social and environmental problems of the municipality, with greater emphasis on combating environmental degradation. |
